Persuasion Tactics At Play

Sisyphus

Sisyphus, first and foremost, is a trickster. He’s conniving and manipulative – and uses this to his advantage. Persuading someone to do something for him is simple – convincing someone to go somewhere or change their mind takes hardly a second thought. And betraying the hiding place of the King of the Gods in order to get a nice fountain in the kingdom? Much easier than thought to be. Sisyphus thinks ahead, and plans for it.

Aside from just trickery, Sisyphus is known to have used his powers of persuasion in other ways – you might say he’s a slight follower of Peitho, but he wouldn’t label himself as that. He just claims it’s his ‘skills’ which ensnared his niece, one of the Pleiades, and an enemy’s daughter. (If Autolycus was to be called an enemy, rather than a nuisance). The question of which skills he’s speaking of is up to debate…

Loyalty is something Sisyphus doesn’t possess – and though he expects it from his subjects, and his family, if it isn’t there he can empathize with that. Every man for himself is something he lives by – and he doesn’t quite understand why everyone lives by that. Loyalty to an extent he can grasp – Merope was devoted enough to him that she wouldn’t even bury him after he died, simply because he requested it. She did that for her best interest, to have him back, so he thought – widows aren’t taken as seriously as wives.

Sisyphus’ also tends keep up a cocky exterior to hide what he’s truly feeling. His fear of dying looks more like a contest to those around him, and one would think he had no respect (or fear) of the Gods. This isn’t true, though he doesn’t quite fear them as much as others would or should.
